These are the perfect spaces for hosting or for enjoying a serene area of relaxation. The best part about a sunroom, is that it is neither indoor or outdoor. They can be customized to allow for more outdoor air flow, or none at all! Check out our curated list of things to keep in mind when it comes to planning your perfect sunroom.

How Are You Using Your Sunroom?

There are a ton of different ways you can utilize a new sunroom. If you’re a hobbyist, a music, craft, sewing or art space might be more your forte. If you have a green thumb, then perhaps an indoor greenhouse or an extended space for those ever growing houseplants you seem to accumulate. Or, perhaps you enjoy fitness and need a gym space where you can enjoy the benefits outdoors rain or shine from inside using your personal equipment.

A very common use is simply more personal room in your home. A sunroom can be a new gathering place for guests, friends, or family members. It can serve as a playroom for the kids or even a cozy reading nook for yourself. We recommend figuring out how you want to use your new sunroom space as your first priority. This will benefit in helping to make further technical decisions such as; budget, finish level, timeline, etc.

3-Season, 4-Season—How Long Will You Use Your Space?

When you plan to add a sunroom, you have many options when it comes to building it out. A sunroom can be built to your specifications, which is why it’s important to determine the range of time in which you will be using this space. If it’s going to be a home office, you will need to make sure it is built for all four seasons and able to withstand the elements of all. If it is likely to just be a greenhouse for your summer garden, then your sunroom can be built specifically for the summer and to be closed off for all other seasons. This all helps to determine the exact blueprint and insulation that will be needed to achieve your sunroom dreams.

Are Utilities Needed?

Once you’ve figured out the range of time that will be needed, it’s time to decide what utilities need to be added to your space. Your sunroom will most likely need power, so even just having a couple outlets as your bare minimum can make all the difference. If you’re looking toward an all season sunroom will need HVAC to help with those hot summer days and cold winter months. Feeling fancy? Add a fireplace to your sunroom and create your own personal cozy winter hideaway in the comfort of your own home.

Where and How Will This Connect to Your Home?

After deciding on what utilities will be needed for your sunroom, you will need to figure out exactly where this new sunroom addition will be. How it connects to your home is extremely important when building out a blueprint. There are many ways you can connect a sunroom— either through the ground level of your home, an enclosed upper deck or even creating a screened-in front porch.

What Level of Finishes Are Required?

Depending on what season your sunroom will be used in, utilities needed and how you are going to use your sunroom— your space may need a specific “finish”. For example, we can create a white box finish which gives you the bare minimum required of your sunroom. Or, we can fully create and customize your space so all you have to do is supply your furnishings. Your budget is also a huge determinant of which type of finish is right for you.

Which Direction Will The Room Face?

You may have an idea of how you want your sunroom to connect to your home, but here are our suggestions when it comes to determining the direction. The direction of any room or windows can impact your space immensely— creating a few pros and cons. Facing your sunroom south will allow you to get the most light every day (perfect for plants!), however, you may need to invest in HVAC for additional cooling. An eastern layout will give you sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon, while the opposite western layout will have you in the hot afternoon sun. Exposing your sunroom toward the north will give you the lowest amount of sun and partial shaded area for most of the day.
