Maximize Your Commercial Office Space for Productivity

For the past couple of years, remote and hybrid work has skyrocketed in popularity. What first started as a strategic move to keep up with production during the national health crisis, has now become a more common way of working. Allowing employees to work from home has increased satisfaction among employees, but can come at a cost. Some businesses are finding a lack of productivity is becoming increasingly common.

But before you make the decision to restructure your in-person/remote/hybrid model, so that you require more in-office presence, consider your current commercial office space. Is this somewhere you’d like to work for 7-8 hours a day? We’ve put together some ideas to ponder as a commercial contractor, whether you’re opening in-person work for the first time in a while or simply looking for a way to increase your company’s productivity.

Selecting the Right Furniture & Decor

Looking back at any media from the 90s or early 2000s, a common theme that was the punchline of any “corporate America” joke was the use of small gray cubicles and plain walls. Seen in movies, TV shows, comic strips, you name it- the average working person was working inside a stale, simple building. However, there’s been an increase in people looking for jobs that provide workspaces that are both visually appealing and work-appropriate. That’s why it’s important to stay up to date on what is currently trending

Office Decor That Tells a Story

Whatever the nature of your business may be, is there a way you can incorporate more of your brand colors? Highlight your company’s values, mission, or other internal goals through wall decor. Is there something that sets you apart from your competitors? Use that to your advantage by purchasing decor that is unique or odd. If anything, this is also a great conversation starter when welcoming new employees or clients.

A great way to update your office decor is by bringing the outside, “in”. Whether you have a green thumb, or perhaps an employee does, selecting indoor plants not only improves air quality but brings a sense of nature into what could otherwise be a dull environment. Plants offer a lighter atmosphere and more visual appeal.

Using Furniture to Your Advantage

You may think a desk, chair, and filing cabinet is all your employees may need to do their job. However, you can really take the extra step and look for unique furniture that can help your employees’ work day even more. Standing desks have been a hot topic recently, allowing users to sit and stand. Or, desk walking pads that allow your employees to walk and work. Both are great options that not only get the blood flow going but increase productivity as well.

If you don’t have a lot of room to work with in terms of incorporating new pieces of furniture, consider items that help to consolidate space or accommodate different uses.

Lighting Is Everything

Flip on the lights in your office. Are they cool-toned? Warm? Do they make you squint, or do they help you relax? Lighting plays a huge role in not only productivity, but in mental health as well. Many psychologists have found that specific lighting elicits certain emotions and feelings, some worse than others.

Warm or shaded lighting (such as in lamps, lanterns, or other decor) is a great way to make your staff feel like they are welcome. Or, if you are lucky enough to have lots of resources for natural lighting, use it to your advantage. Natural lighting allows for a more connected sense to the “outside world”, even from inside a building.

Customizing Individual & Collaboration Spaces

Utilize your individual and collaboration spaces by creating an environment that feels more inviting. If you routinely have clients in your office for meetings, offer team-building exercises, or have internal collaboration, then we recommend analyzing your current conference spaces. Do your tables and chairs need a facelift? Do you have a TV or casting program that needs an update? Or, perhaps the walls could use a new coat of paint. You want any of your guests, whether they be a client or employee, to feel comfortable in your space.
