Which Kitchen Countertop Surface is Right for You?

A kitchen remodel comes with a lot of questions and decisions. Countertops are generally considered the star of the show in the kitchen. In our experience, countertops go far beyond aesthetic value. Understanding your needs and how you use the kitchen plays a big role in choosing the right countertop. As you contemplate the different surface options, consider how you use your kitchen. Are you fairly clean or kind of a slob? Are you hard on your countertops by moving, sliding, and dropping items frequently? Are you only preparing food or does your countertop second as a dining area? What’s the style of your home? Knowing the answers to these questions will help you make a decision you won’t regret. Let’s take a look at five countertop options for your kitchen remodel.

Granite Countertop

Granite has long been a popular choice for kitchen countertops. It provides the essence of elegance. As a natural stone it is resistant to heat, scratches, and even bacteria. There are plenty of color and pattern options available. Granite is a durable solution for your countertop.

Maintenance

Adding a sealant will prevent damage to the countertops and resealing every three to five years can be expected. Cleaning with soap and warm water after use is recommended.

Marble Countertop

Marble, like granite, is a natural stone with all the looks of luxury. Each marble countertop is guaranteed to be unique. It’s typical for marble to occupy an island countertop. The material is prone to scratches and staining, which can be a challenge to repair. Leaving sauces, spices, or pans on top of the marble can lead to these issues.

Maintenance

Marble can be cleaned with warm, soapy water. Sealing will help limit staining over time. Etching and scratching may require more intensive solutions. Do your best to not leave spills unattended for too long.

Butcher Block

A butcher block countertop provides a unique and warm style in the kitchen. Many types of wood, from maple to walnut to bamboo, are used for this style. If you really want to add some character to the kitchen you could use this countertop as a cutting board. However, because it’s wood, it can be a target for bacteria if not properly cleaned and maintained.

Maintenance

Oiling and waxing a butcher block countertop is very important, especially during a cold and dry Iowa winter. The wood can dry out and begin cracking if not properly maintained. Sanding may be required to remove minor stains.

Quartz

Quartz is a blend of stone and resin. A quartz countertop offers a stain and scratch resistant surface. However, the resin component eliminates the heat resistance found in 100% natural stone like granite. There are many color and style options for quartz countertops and certain patterns can mimic granite or marble.

Maintenance

Warm, soapy water will to the trick for general cleaning. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive scrubbing pads.

Concrete

Are you looking for an industrial feel in your kitchen? Concrete countertops might be a good choice. Concrete can come in custom colors and cast into unique forms to fit your space. Concrete is a heavy material and will need a strong base. The porous nature of concrete will require some sealing and attention but the surface is sure to be durable.

Maintenance

Using a sealant will help your countertop stand up to stains and etching. Use warm water and soap for general cleaning.
