Winter is here. Okay, winter isn’t really here, technically, but it’s already snowed in Iowa a few times and that has us thinking about the best time to start a home addition project. You may think winter is a terrible season to start work on a home addition, but it’s actually one of the best times to get going, for a number of reasons. First things first, though:
Thanks to advancements in technology, pouring a foundation even when it’s snowing is possible. Even more important: it’s safe. This means that by using the proper methods and concrete additives, a foundation poured when the ground is frozen does not sacrifice the strength or integrity of the finished product.
Typically, contractors in the Midwest have more open schedules during the winter. Of course this is due, in part, to the weather. However, it’s partly because folks don’t believe the colder months are a good time to complete a home addition or remodeling project. Unfortunately, they wait until the end of winter or even the spring to reach out to contractors in their area. At that point, those contractors could be booked up until late summer or fall.
Of course any construction work happening around your home will cause some disruptions, but it’s our job to make that as easy to deal with as possible. We’re people, too, and we have families, so we know what it’s like to have your life turned upside down during construction. Because work isn’t going on directly inside your home during a home addition build, your family will only deal with minimal disruptions. Constructing a home addition is much different than remodeling a kitchen or bathroom. It’s easier to keep your living space clean by hanging up plastic walls once more construction gets going, to protect the rest of your home from dust and debris.
Springtime in Iowa can mean rain, storms, and humidity. While we can see quite a bit of snow in the winter, it’s much easier to deal with during construction than downpours and flooding. In fact, even when it’s freezing outside, if the weather is dry and the sun is shining, your crew will likely be even more productive than they might be if it’s pouring rain. Additionally (pun intended), if your foundation is poured, the room framed, and covered by the time spring rolls around, you don’t have to deal with your contractor and crew getting rained out, because interior work will have already started.
Mid- to late-winter is a great time to start planning your new or updated outdoor living space with a trusted contractor. When you’re living in Iowa, you know how unpredictable February and March can be, weather-wise. Why not use that time to begin the design process on your new backyard, deck, or patio? It’s nice to have something to look forward to, after all.
Finding the right contractor for your home addition can be daunting. That’s why it’s important to meet with several before making the decision.
