A unique weather event known as a derecho ripped across Iowa on August 10, 2020. A derecho is a long-lived, straight-line wind storm. The storm produced consistent winds from 70-110 mph, with peak gusts estimates of 140 mph, equal to a category 4 hurricane. The powerful storm blew down powerlines, leaving hundreds of thousands without power. Many mature trees were lost, grain bins were completely destroyed, crops were flattened, and homes and businesses suffered significant structural damage.
Even two weeks after the devastating storm, debris is piled along curbs waiting to be hauled away. Many homeowners are left with damages to their siding or roof due to fallen trees or wind damage. Premier Construction is here to help you get back on your feet and to be sure you don’t get taken advantage of.
By now, you have likely been in contact with your insurance agent to file a claim. The claims adjusters for many insurance providers have been very busy, even coming from the surrounding states to assist in assessing the damages. If you are still waiting for an adjuster, it’s important to take photos and video to document the extent of the damage to your home and property.
Premier Construction is happy to provide a free estimate for the damages at your home or business. We have already assisted many homeowners in the Des Moines area with repairs following the derecho storm.
Unfortunately, it is quite common for out of state contractors to make a presence in areas affected by severe weather. These contractors are referred to as “storm-chasers” because they show up after intense storms hoping to capitalize on the work available. Many times, these contractors charge an obscene amount of money for their repairs and services. Preying on homeowners after a tragic event is a bad business model.
While you hope to have repairs done quickly, you should be sure you are hiring a vetted, qualified contractor. Do your research before agreeing to have the work done. Read reviews, learn about the company, and get multiple quotes. (We have heard of tree-removal companies charging north of $10,000!) Sure, there is a sense of urgency to get your home back in order, but be sure you aren’t being manipulated and overpaying.
Your homeowner insurance is the first line of recovery resources to address. Once you work out the details with our insurance company, look into state and federal level resources available to you. The Iowa Department of Human Services is offering food assistance, an Individual Disaster Assistance Grant Program, and more. President Donald Trump approved federal assistance for residents of Linn County.
