Fall Cleaning Checklist: Get Your Home Ready for Winter

Just like that, with the flip of our calendars, fall has arrived and winter is just around the corner. November is one of the best times to prepare for the freezing temperatures, heavy snow and brutal weather that accompanies winter in the Midwest. Doing a deep clean of the interior and exterior of your home is the best way to ensure you are ready for not just your in-laws coming into town for the holidays, but that your home will keep you safe and warm all season long.

Perform an Outdoor Inspection of Your Home

Check for Drafts

The last thing anyone wants as the weather starts to cool down is to have a draft in your home. Poor installation can result in higher heating bills and leave your entire family without the comfort they deserve during the winter. If you feel a draft coming from around exterior doors or notice an increased heating bill but no payoff, it may be time to winterize your home. Premier Construction can advise you through the process on the best interior and exterior solutions to avoid drafts, save you money on your monthly bills and keep you warm all winter long.

Clean or Replace Gutters

Clogged or damaged gutters can cause a lot of damage to your home. If your gutters aren’t working properly, they can cause structural damage to the roof, cause the basement to flood or the gutters can freeze over during the winter, pulling them away from the roof. Cleaning out your gutters before winter comes is a great way to ensure your gutters are doing their job and prevent unnecessary damage to your home down the line.

Bring In Outdoor Furniture

As sad as it is to see summer go, it’s time to say goodbye to patio furniture and bring it inside for the winter. Outdoor furniture can be expensive and the rain, snow, and ice can be harsh on tables, chairs, or benches left out in the elements. If you have a basement, storeroom, or shed, grab a team to help store the furniture until spring.  If you don’t have a place to store everything, consider renting a storage unit. Doing so will save you money down the line so you don’t have to purchase new furniture each year.

Don’t Forget To Tidy Up Indoors

Deep Clean Floors and Carpet

Give your floors and carpet a deep clean to prepare for the snow-covered boots that will make their way through your home in the winter. If you have hardwood floors, look for scratches or wear to the floors. Focus on cleaning those areas first by hand buffing, waxing, and restaining the wood. If the job seems too big for one person, consider hiring a professional. The same goes for carpeting throughout your home. Check for signs of stains, pilling, or damage. If the job can be done at home, great. If not, bringing a professional in to clean the carpet will be your best bet.

Prep for Guests: Clean Communal Rooms

With the changing of the seasons comes an influx of guests to your home during the holidays. Whether if it’s for Thanksgiving dinner, Haunauka or Christmas Eve — there are bound to be more people making their way through your home during the fall and winter. When trying to tackle cleaning your home, focus on rooms that guests will frequent more often. Communal bathrooms, the living room, kitchen, and dining room are great places to start. Keeping up on a regular cleaning schedule throughout the season will ensure you are always ready to host.

Arrange the Kitchen for Holiday Cooking

Everyone loves the food that comes along with the holidays. But not everyone loves cleaning up after the cooking and baking is done. Prep your kitchen for an increase in activity by doing a pantry purge and getting rid of old food and donating excess items to your local food pantry. After you have made space, rearrange and organize your kitchen in a way that makes the most sense for the cooking you are expecting to do. This will save you a lot of time and headache down the road when you’re desperately looking for the snowman cookie cutters or you can’t find the turkey baster on Thanksgiving.
