Spring Cleaning Tips: Caring for Stainless Steel Appliances

Premier Construction has designed beautiful custom kitchens full of gorgeous stainless steel appliances. We love stainless steel because it resists rust and works with basically any design style. However, we know a kitchen is to be used and lived in, so your appliances will end up with fingerprints and food splatters. While annoying, it’s not the end of the world. Let’s talk about how you should properly care for your stainless steel appliances.

Tools to Use on Stainless Steel Appliances

Stainless steel resists rust but can be scratched if you use the wrong tools. Never ever use steel wool, rough scrub brushes, or any other abrasive cleaners unless you want to destroy the shine of the stainless steel. Also, be sure you’re paying attention in the cleaning aisle to look only for a cleaning product created specifically to clean stainless steel. Many all-purpose cleaners end up creating streaks on stainless steel appliances.

Clean with Caution

Take a look at the instruction manual for your appliance. There should be some cleaning tips there that you’ll need to follow perfectly. You may have an appliance that should only be cleaned by wiping it down with a damp cloth, depending on the finish.

Getting Tough with Stainless Steel

If your stainless steel appliances have some tougher, caked-on food, grease, or oil, don’t worry—you can clean it. If vinegar isn’t cutting it (this is a great go-to), we’ve found that mixing baking soda and olive oil can create a scrub gentle enough to cut through the grime without scratching the surface. Start off with the softest cleanser possible and work your way up, always being careful not to damage the finish.

Polishing Stainless Steel Appliance: Go with the Grain

Pay close attention to the “grain.” You may think that term only makes sense with wood, but your stainless steel appliances also have a grain. Take a look and you’ll notice whether it’s horizontal or vertical. When cleaning/polishing it, make sure to rub in the direction of the grain. You can use mineral oil or olive oil to polish up stainless steel appliances. Apply the oil to your cloth, then wipe over the appliance (in the direction of the grain) to bring back its shine.
